Bacterial Vaginosis is a very common vaginal infection in women.
Usually caused by an imbalance in the bacterial flora of the vagina, bacterial vaginosis occurs due to an abnormal growth in the number of bacteria that normally live in the vagina. It is one of the main causes of vaginal discharge in women of childbearing age.
The exact cause has not been fully established, but there are several common risk factors: a change in pH due to hygiene products or sexual activity.
The most common risk factors for bacterial vaginosis include:
- Frequent vaginal washing or showering
- Heavy or prolonged periods
- Smoke
- Having another sexually transmitted infection
- Multiple sexual partners
- Using ''sex toys''
- Oral sex
- Normal hormonal changes such as during puberty, pregnancy or menopause
- Current or recent antibiotic use
